SATURN-MARS IN CONJUNCTION/OPPOSITION : THE TWO HEAVY WEIGHTS OF THE PLANETARY PANTHEON
The coming together of these two by transit or in the natal chart is an extreme Struggle. It is deemed as the Yama Yoga or the Death facing Combination, as often natives face death like situations.Given the natures of these two planets is it any wonder why? Mars conjoins Saturn roughly once in two years. Occasionally, due to retrograde motion of one or both the planets, timing differs of such conjunction. This year Saturn is in Sagittarius and Mars reaches to conjunct with Saturn on 7th March 2018 at 18:53 and will remain in Sagittarius till 16:48 on 2nd May 2018. Mars is the ‘instant’ ‘trigger’ ‘action’ factor for all happenings in our life. The two most malefic energies coming together is a challenge in any chart. Although Mars exalts in Saturn’s sign of Capricorn, so we know the nature of Mars benefits from Saturn’s deep sense of penance, reflection, forbearance and perseverance.
It gives Mars excellence and focus, which in itself left alone is perhaps like a boorish teenager and creating a lot of troublesome and unruly behaviour. Obviously, most teenagers are creatures of raging hormones and they want what they want, for the moment and can barely think beyond it. Contemplating their actions and words is not a strong forte. Similar can be the nature of Mars, unless we learn to harness it and manage the fire.There in lies the key. Mars is the ‘doer’, the action man leading to what we truly desire. In order for it to get focused and bring about excellence and knowledge, it needs to be ‘tamed’. As Mars is Agni ttatva or fire element, the fire can easily go rampantly and instantly out of control. The sign of Sagittarius is a fire sign. It is also the sign of Krurushetra, or the battlefield as my Jyotish Guru Pandit Sanjay Rath often alludes to.
Saturn does very well in the signs of Jupiter. Both of these two in Sagittarius, may well be that a lot can get done and focus continues to be steady and strong. Of course the journey will not be without its pitfalls and meandering slightly off the ‘beaten’ ways!
We have to surrender where Saturn is. Saturn is cold, steady, windy, dry and is the Vayu Ttatva or the Air/Gaseous element. Saturn and Mars are the enemies or rather inimical in their natures. Saturn’s domain is structures, building and letting go, karmic repayment of debts coming from various lifetimes. The key word for dealing with Saturn is surrender, letting go of one’s fears and rebuilding with authenticity. When has Mars been ever good at backing out? Mars needs a mission and with Saturn one needs lots of ‘intermissions‘!
According to Brihata Jatakam of Varaha Mihira, he states that ‘When Mars is with Saturn, people are afflicted with grief, full of miseries, untruthful, and reproached by all’.
Jataka Bharnam states the effects when Mars be in conjunction with Saturn : If there occurs Mars with Saturn the native is maker of arms and weapons, fights battles, is engaged promptly in the work of stealing, tells lies and is devoid of happiness. Furthermore, it states ‘The Longevity of the relative who is related to that house in which there occurs the conjunction of Mars & Saturn will be shorter or his health will not always remain sound. In the body of the native himself there always remains the possibility of injury, disease or operation in that organ of the body which is related to that house in which the conjunction takes place.’ ‘If formed in the 4th house, the native is hard hearted, of harsh disposition, selfish, cruel, violent and has other instincts.If these planets are in conjunction in the 12th house they reveal in the native the qualities opposed to those written above and give him humanly qualities,’
Coming together of these two heavy weights is very much driven by desire and an extreme challenge to fulfill it. Its aspects and postion in the chart gives us what we will ‘fight for’ or willing to go to battle for. No doubt, rage, anger, fiesty temper are all Mars domain, as is commonly perceived. And perhaps a negative approach to Mars, no doubt. Its nature is malefic and so is that of Saturn. Saturn being slow moving planet, takes its time. It wants to get things right, perfectly in keeping with the law of the land/social milieu/environment/one’s internal makeup while Mars wants it quick and is willing to go to lengths to get it. Saturn can wait as long as it takes and waiting is an anathema to the nature of Mars. So one can see struggle…Themes that get constellated are that of extreme emotion, violence and frustration, accidents and upsets, alienations, being the outcast, dreadful fear especially if Rahu gets involved.
Hence planets in the 3rd House, of any chart, will have a strong combative element for achieving, as Mars / Mangal is the karaka or significator of this house.
Three signs, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn are under the influence of Saturn’s Sade-Sati.If you have Ascendant in these signs, huge changes in life are on cards. Scorpio Ascendants have had their share of chaos and upheaval past couple of years. Additionally, Rahu-Ketu are in Cancer-Capricorn axis will bring added woes into the mix Capricorn Moons and Ascendants. And so will Sagittarius Moons and Ascendant, be hugely affected, Sagittarius rising should take care of their health, as often this conjunction affects your health and mental wellbeing.
Moreover, Saturn’s aspects Aquarius, Gemini and Virgo (Moon or Ascendant). The saving grace for Aquarius Ascendants may be that this conjunction is in the 3rd house, where by and large malefics will rejoice. And Jupiter will bring its beneficence on it by aspecting it. So, definitely slight improvement. Meanwhile, Gemini is aspected by Jupiter and Mars, apart from Saturn/Mars. So Gemini Moon’s and Ascendants may also feel less the brunt. There is no doubt relationships will be a huge issue and so be warned! Anyways, for Gemini, relationships is fraught with problems as they are always in two minds about it. Taurus Moon and Taurus Rising people may have a few health scares, so do take care and be OCD about check-ups.
Few people who have laboured with the Saturn-Mars Conjunction
Madame Blavatsky was instrumental in bringing modern occult thought from the East to the Western world. Originator of many of the ideas and terms which have a century
later been assembled within the New Age Movement. The Theosophical Society, which she co-founded, has been the major advocate of occult philosophy in the West.
In September 1877, a powerful impact was made upon the reading and thinking public by the publication of H.P. Blavatsky’s first monumental work, Isis Unveiled. It sold the one thousand copies of the first printing within ten days. The New York Herald-Tribune considered the work as one of the “remarkable productions of the century,” It outlines the history, scope and development of the Occult Sciences, the nature and origin of Magic, the roots of Christianity, the fallacies of established orthodox Science, against the backdrop of the secret teachings which run as a golden thread through bygone centuries.
Her chart is a classic testimont to the special Argala of the 3rd House. Especially if they are Malefics. The 3rd house here is packed to the gills, illustrating someone whose mind is active in very significant ways. She had this preoccupation of constantly rewriting her past and trying to forget and quickly move onto to other pastures. Her personality being larger than life, her entire being was occupied by ‘Psycho-Spiritual aspect’ of life. She was obese, smoked and as one of her authors described her.
A reconstruction and deconstruction by Dorian Borsella
I have always had a fear that I might not be able to find something that’s wrapped up under my very nose, because I am confused about the shape of the package. Every once in a great while, the package can be a person who has much wisdom, but you immediately get turned off and never get to drink from that fountain. How about a short, fat woman with thick arms, hair that can’t be tamed, who is also loud, forceful, creative with the truth, wearing a tent of a dress, wearing a handful of rings, who cusses and smokes and manipulates and has a rotten temper? How about the same lady in a proper Victorian setting! But yet—there is that great wisdom! So let’s unwrap the package.
Having all the heavy malefics in the 3rd house may give rise to some amount of courage….
There is no danger that dauntless courage cannot conquer;
there is no trial that spotless purity cannot pass through;
there is no difficulty that strong intellect cannot surmount.
For those who win onwards there is a reward past all telling
– the power to bless and save humanity;
for those who fail, there are other lives in which success may come.
H.P. Blavatsky Col. Wr. XIII, p. 219
In an article for McCall’s magazine, the novelist Kurt Vonnegut dubbed Blavatsky “the Founding Mother of the Occult in America.”
Saturn-Mars in the 12th house, as Jataka Bharnam States, that these gives the native humanly qualities. Yet, that conjunction has been channelled into concrete manifestation of creative musical talent. Of course Saturn is the Amtaya Karaka, and Mars is the Atmakaraka. Such brilliant conjunction in the 12th house, could have easily gone awry. As Pandit Sanjay Rath says, Saturn in Cancer gives way to Raja Yoga.
We see yet again all 3 malefics in the 9th house. Here again we have Saturn (AmKaraka) and Rahu in Marana Sthana as Atmakaraka. This is a classic signature, of extreme force who will leave no stone unturned . The inner Alienation and deep sense of being an outsider is always there. I guess that is reflective of the quality of his voicehat is prfoundly touching and is haunting as well as the guitar playing expresses emotions on a wider colllective soul.
Mars-Saturn themes always express a sense of Alienation and being not quite ‘normal’.Hence the struggle.
She is considered a giant of American anthropology, a celebrity scientist, an icon of public culture whose research into the carefree sexual habits of Samoan adolescents helped shape feministic ideas and spur on a sexual revolution of the 1960’s.
Derek Freeman, an Australian who did not get much of a look in from his colleagues took on Margaret Mead. He launched one of the great academic controversies of our times, one that propelled the largely unknown researcher to global notoriety and appearances on Good Morning America thus shaking the foundations of anthropology. The “Dragon of Canberra”, who was renowned for an overbearing manner and his intellectual intimidation of students and colleagues. He systematically challenged Margaret Mead and the authenticity and validity of her research.
There are examples galore on this Saturn -Mars in Conjunction or aspect to each other.
One thing is certain, this is not for the faith hearted, and needs a contant awareness of its potential and a constant drive to work towards manifesting what can be rather than taking unconsciously the easier route of negativity, toxic frustration and alienation, deep seated violence that is inherent in this aspect. The later are lower levels of consciousness manifesting and the question is which one is one going to focus and aspire towards? As without a vision this will come to not.
