Samvatsara : The Jupiter Years, You are the year you are born in !

Samvatsara: A year in the making with Brihaspati Jupiter

According to ancient text on Vedanga Jyotisha, of Author Sage Lagadha, Lord Prajapati or Brahma is the embodiment of Samvatsara, which explores different segments of time e.g day, seasons ritus, ayana and month masa. Thus, Prajapati presides over yugas which is equal to 5 years or samvatsara.

Samvatsara roughly means a period of one full year sidereal when the Sun enters the sign of Aries. Some scholars also define Samvatsara, as the time in which Brihaspati Jupiter with its average speed crosses the journey of one zodiac sign. When Jupiter completes its sojourn through the entire zodiac of twelve signs, then that comprises of 12 Samvatsaras. During the journey, Jupiter is close or far from the Earth, thus creating auspicious rays and not so auspicious.

This results in the effects of every samvatsara signification of that year being different. Sixty Samvatsaras repeat in a cycle of 12 years. Significator of a year is Shani, Saturn, which takes approximately 30 years to complete entire twelve signs of the zodiac.

At the beginning of creation, although sounds an anomaly, (As there is no beginning, as time is infinite, we must consider certain manageable periods that can be of measurable import. That is accordance with the Surya Siddhanta, where time Kala is of two kinds, one is Mahakalaa which infinite, eternal, irrefutable and can neither be born or slain even when the creation is slain.)

The yugas of periods started when Jupiter & Saturn were at 0 degree of Aries. Taking the lowest common multiple between the motion of Jupiter and Saturn which is 12 years & 30 years respectively, we get 60.

Therefore, every sixty years, both the planets reach the 0 degrees of Aries. In this interplay of Brihaspati & Shani, the angles formed, the and the influences coming thereof, have a remarkable influence on the Samavatsaraas.  The two outer planets are instrumental in affecting countries, individuals and eventually on a collective level, our inner workings which reflect in the collective subconscious.

(Jataka Bharnam Chap2)

Another way of viewing Samvatsaras and the 60-year cycle

Jupiter’s 60 years cycle is also known as Jovian Cycle, which in fact, reflects a combined effects of Jupiter and Saturn. After carrying out deep and sustained observations of visible effects of Jupiter and also imperceptible and indirect effects of Saturn, the ancient sages put forward the results of each Samvatsara (Jovian year).

The exact definition means a Jovian year called bārhaspatya varśa referring to Bṛhaspati Jupiter.

There are sixty Jovian years that get mapped into (1) The Twelve Sun signs of the zodiac based on Jupiter transit and (2) sub-cycles of five-years called savatsara Yuga. In this manner we have 60 Jovian years (12 × 5 = 60).

One yuga comprises of five years, and are Samvatsara, Parivatsara, Idavatsara, Anuvatsara, and Idvatsara.

Year                        Deities

YEARS Taitreya Brhamana Garga VArahmihira
1.Samvatsara Agni Agni Agni
2.PArivatsara Aditya Aditya Aditya
3.Idavatsara Chandra Vaayu Chandra
4.Anuvatsara Vaayu Chandra Prajapati
5.Idvatsara X Mrityu Rudra

In the first year samvatsara rainfall will be evenly diustributed, 2nd parvatsara cycle rainfall will be good at start, while the thris cycle of Idavatsara rainfall will be plentiful throughout the year while in the fourth Anuvatsara, rainfall will be late, and in the last year rainfall will scanty.

Siddhanta Jyotisha, Astronomical text have counted 60 year cycle from to begin from Vijaya and going down to Nandana.

Varahmihira had other plans, he regarded the beginning of the samvatsara cycle not from Vijaya but from the 35th samvatsara of Prabhava. Since then Varahamihira times this sequence is accepted.

The first 20 of these samvaatsaras are named as Brahma Vimshatika, (possessing of Rajas qualities) those from 21-40 are Vishnu Vimshatika (possessing of Sattva qualities) and the last 20 are rudra vimshatika, (possessing of Tamas qualities)based on the great holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara.

Calculation of which year you belong to according to the Vikram Samvat

Vikrama Samvat – Vikram Samvat (िवकर्म संवत, abbreviated  ‘V.S.’) is the calendar established by Varāhamihira during the period of Indian emperor Vikramāditya of Ujjain, which is the home of one of the greatest jyotirliñga, the Mahākāleshwar. Vikramaditya invaded Ujjain and drove away from the Śakas. To commemorate this event, he started a new era called the “Vikrama era“. The Ujjain calendar started around 58–56 BCE, śukla pratipada (after the new moon) and follows the amānta māsa.Subsequently,  Shaka-era calendar was started in 78 CE at Pratishthana.

It is a popularly used calendar in North India and Nepal, among the Hindus and the Sikh population.  One of several regional Hindu calendars in use on the Indian subcontinent, it is based on twelve synodic Lunar months masa  and 365 Solar days dina.

The New Year always begins from the New Moon in CHaitra Masa Month, when the month is complete ends in Surya in Mesha Aries. This is the rule in Brahma-Sidhanta

The Vikram Samvat Calendar is approximately 56 years and 8½ months ahead of the current Gregorian calendar.  Consider the date 30 Mar 1987 and to this add 56 years and 8½ months. A simple system is to add 57 years to the Gregorian Year. For example 1987+57=2044 is the Vikrama samvat 2044 is from 1987-88.

Similarly, currently, year 2020, we follow this : 2020 + 57 = 2077 of Vikram samvat

Śloka 1.1 संवत्कालो गर्हयुतः कृत्वा शुन्यरसैयुर्तः। शेषाः संवत्सरा ज्ञेयाः पर्भवाा बुधैः कर्मात्॥ saṁvatkālo grahayutaḥ kṛtvā śunyarasairyutaḥ | śeṣāḥ saṁvatsarā jñeyāḥ prabhavādyā budhaiḥ kramāt ||

(References : Pandit Sanjay Rath PJC course)

Translation: Add nine to the Vikram samvat calendar year and reduce it by 128. Thereafter, expunge multiples of 60. The balance gives the Jovian year reckoned from Prabhava (1). Example: Convert VS 2077 to Jovian year.

Step 1: Add Nine to the VS and minus Twelve  2077 + 9 – 12 = 2074

Step 2: Divide this by 60 and take the decimal only  2041÷60 = 34.56666; Take 0.56666 only

Step 3: Multiply this decimal by 60 : .56666 ×60 = 33.999 corresponds to approx. 34, which is Śārvarī.

The author of Jataka Parijat also makes a somewhat contradictory statement about such a native and says that a native born in this ‘Samvatsara’ because of having a desire of sexual intercourse with some other man’s wife is endowed with a flirting mind.

Besides, it has also been mentioned that he remains distressed due to his wife and is afraid from water. But the effects of birth in this ‘Samvatsara’ as described in ‘Jataka Parijat´ are quite opposed to those described above. There such a native has been spoken of as one who has attachment or attraction towards someone else’s wife, is stupid or foolish and engaged in controversy.
